Random things on my recent walk around the downtown St. Pete neighborhood lake, Crescent Lake Park.
Another muscovy duck family from my walk around Crescent Lake this summer.
They were walking down the street and got to a corner that had all of these yellow petals on the ground from the tree above. The babies just plopped down on the petals and hung out there for a while.
Crescent Lake Park near downtown St. Petersburg had lots of duck families in late June. There were several muscovy families as well as a few mallard families and one white duck with an orange baby.

I can always find green herons at this lake.
This looks like a young mallard that’s molting and getting his male feathers in.
Lots of young blue jays.
A grackle with a yummy snack.
A leucistic Eurasian collared-dove. It’s rare to see an all white Eurasian dove.
You can always hear the loud screaming of monk parakeets at this park. They nest in the water tower near the park and spend a lot of time on the grass eating. They blend in really well and unless you hear them screaming, you would never know they were in the trees in front of you.
Crescent Lake Park is a small park near downtown St. Petersburg. There’s a small lake with a sidewalk all around. There’s a ball field next door as well as a dog park and houses across the street on 2 sides of the park. On a Saturday morning, the park is full of joggers, walkers, kids playing and me, the crazy lady with the camera.
I saw this red bellied woodpecker up in a tree right on the lake at Crescent Lake Park in downtown St. Petersburg. It looks like his beak is curled up. He seemed to be working on a nest. He looked healthy. I guess as long as he can get the bugs with his tongue, he’s okay.

An interesting find at Crescent Lake Park.
I couldn’t see them at first but could hear them screaming from across the lake. As I got closer I could see movement in the trees and in the grass below. You can usually find wild monk parakeets at Crescent Lake park near downtown St. Petersburg if you listen for them. They are really loud. I sat under the tree for a few minutes and watched them. They were eating bugs in the grass and flirting in the trees. This was in late June so they must have still been nesting. They nest high up in the water tower near the lake.
White pigeon? This is a rare bird around here. He looks lost.
This juvenile grackle was chasing mom around trying to get a handout. He’s old enough to get food on his own by now.

It looks like he was drying off his wings. Or cooling off. I don’t see them do this very often.
My first sight of the least bittern.
He was very pretty.
Full disclosure. I had read there was a least bittern sighted at Crescent Lake Park. It’s a small park near downtown St. Petersburg with a dog park and playground. It’s not a big park so I thought I might have a chance of finding it. After two laps around the lake, I found it in the reeds. It was right on the end of the lake where the dog park is so I didn’t think it would hang out there but that’s where he was.
