A cold pre-Christmas trip to Atlanta

Brett and I headed up to Atlanta the week before Christmas week. It was going to be much colder (high of 40 and lows in the teens) than last year’s visit but we brought plenty of warm clothes. My sister and her husband came over for a night and we spent a morning at Stone Mountain Park. I had not been to the park since 2011. It was really cold so there wasn’t a lot of people here (and it was a weekday).

One of the attractions here is the carving into the mountain stone of several Confederate figures as well as the big beautiful wooded park. You can read more about the carving here.  There’s a lot of controversy over the carving and the history that the park represents. There are groups that are trying to change that but it’s been a slow process. You can read about it here.

My sister and I posing on the lawn. Many years ago when I lived in Atlanta I climbed the mountain several times. There’s a winding path up one side of the mountain to walk up.

There’s a small (tourist) village in the park that was all decorated for Christmas. Even the dinosaurs were decked out in holiday scarves. Since it was a cold weekday the village was closed but it was nice to walk around in the quiet.

It’s beautiful here in the park, right outside of the city. There’s hiking trails and a big lake for swimming in the summer. After lunch nearby, Debbie and her husband were on their way back to Birmingham.

After lunch Brett and I went out looking for some new parks to walk around for the afternoon. We found an old one that we had never been to. Just off a busy road in Atlanta, the Blue Heron Nature Preserve was a small pretty park with Nancy Creek running through it.

We were working our way towards downtown to try a new pizza place but still had an hour to kill so we found another “new to us” park on the way. The Reservoir Overlook at the Bellwood Quarry was a small park but we were able to walk around for a while and got a view of downtown right before sunset.

We spent 4 days hiking around in the cold weather so more to come.

Christmas on Main Street

The side of a realtor office on Main Street in Dunedin changes murals with the seasons. Whoever the artist is does a really good job capturing the spirit of  the town.

The businesses in the area decorate the light posts along Main Street each year. Some are the same every year but many change it up. These are a few of my favorites although I think the flamingo is my favorite.

On the other side of Pinellas county, Safety Harbor also decorates along their Main Street. The last 2 are in front of the Bassano Cheesecake Cafe. During the holidays you may catch the owner walking around in a Grinch costume and they do have the best cheesecake in the Tampa Bay area.

Well said, Grinch!

Above are some shots of a few of my favorite houses in a nearby neighborhood that really goes all out. They have long lines to get into the neighborhood on the weekends before Christmas. Brett and I drove through early this year on a weekday.

Me sitting with Santa on a recent trip to Atlanta to spend some time with family. Brett and I found 4 new parks to hike around this trip so more to come on those.

I want to thank everyone who stopped by this past year and hope you stop by again in the next year. I’ve got more pictures to come. Have a great Christmas!

Small town Christmas

These are some shots of last year’s Safety Harbor morning Christmas parade. I was out for a walk on the waterfront and stumbled upon the parade that was just starting. It was a fun cold morning.

After dinner one night Brett and I stopped at one of the famously decorated houses near our house. The above is from one house. They draw huge crowds on the weekends and you are welcome to walk around the yard to look.

A few other fun houses we saw that night.

Nothing says “Florida Christmas” like a pelican with a present in his beak.

Ghosts of Atlanta Christmas Pasts

For years Brett and I made the trip to Atlanta over Christmas to visit his family. We had lived there for years and it was like going home. The first pictures I could find from those trips was in 2009. We were heading into the city and I noticed the Peachtree Plaza Hotel (round building on the left) was missing a lot of windows. A tornado had come through in 2008 and it took 2 years for them to order and replace the windows.

The Charlie Brown Christmas Tree on the top of Macy’s at Lenox Mall.

My sister Debbie and I went to Atlantic Station and walked around. They had a huge Christmas tree that you could see from the interstate (Debbie was standing under it). The 2nd shot is from the Station. I’m sure the view has changed a lot with more buildings going up every year.

We had a cold trip in 2010. Above is me in sweats taking a picture of the tree at Brett’s parents.

The forecast called for snow but we really just got frozen rain. It didn’t stay long.

I found a chipmunk in Brett’s parents backyard. I think he thought I was going to try and steal the acorns in his cheeks. We don’t have them here in the Tampa bay area and I missed seeing them.

I saw my first cedar waxwings down the street. I went for walk before dark on Christmas eve and saw them in the trees. I ran back to the house and got my camera and they were still there.

Heading back to Atlanta for Christmas in 2011.

I had heard there were good birds at the Oakland Cemetery in downtown Atlanta so I bundled up and headed out with my camera. I saw my first nuthatch there.

I found Margaret Mitchell’s grave. She wrote Gone With The Wind in Atlanta.

Me being a tourist in my old town. My sister and I went to the Christmas Village in Stone Mountain Park. I had my old Nikon bag with my Nikon D90 in it back then.

Buddy always made the trip with us. This was Christmas 2012.

I went back to Oakland Cemetery for a cold walk on Christmas Eve, You can see the gold top of the Georgia capital from here.

I saw my first dark eyed junco on this trip. There were several here and they were very accommodating.

It wouldn’t be a Christmas blog without a cardinal in it even if the snow is fake and there were plenty at the cemetery.  Brett’s family eventually moved down to Florida so we don’t get up to Atlanta as much as we used to and not for Christmas anymore.

Have a Merry Christmas and stay warm if you are up north!

Party at the baseball field

For the last several years (excluding 2020) my husband’s work Christmas party is held at Enchant. They decorate the Rays baseball field (Tropicana Field) with tons of lights. We have a late lunch in a private suite and then everyone gets to walk around and see the lights. These are all last year’s pictures since we just went to this year’s party and I haven’t gotten a chance to download them.

Have a Merry Christmas and thanks for stopping by! More to come.

Merry Christmas from Disney Springs

Thanksgiving weekend my sisters and I headed over to Disney Springs to have an early lunch and walk around. Disney Springs is a shopping and dining area with activities and events. It’s basically a Disney park without rides and you don’t have to pay to get in. We got there early in the morning and left early in the afternoon. By the time we left it was so crowded you could barely walk. It was a fun way to get into the Christmas spirit.

I realized later that you could see my reflection in the window and my sister standing next to me.

We stopped at the bakery on the way out to get deserts to take home.

Merry Christmas to everyone and thanks for stopping by my blog during the year!
