I spent a few minutes at Chesnut Park in mid-January watching this crazy pileated woodpecker hanging upside down on the tree. He was banging away and ignoring me. They are so much fun to watch. In the 3rd and last picture you can see his tongue hanging out. Looks like he’s licking the bark. What does bark taste like? I imagine it taste like dirty oatmeal.
Great shots no matter Whay way up the Woodpecker is.
I’ve never gotten a good picture of a pileated. See one from time to time in my neighborhood, but they are pretty skittish, and when not being skittish, they move around a lot. So kudos for all these fine shots. You’re right. They are fun to watch.
It is so amazing to watch them at work…Love the photos. You got some great shots.
I’ve only captured a distant photo, your close-ups are so wonderful, from every angle. It’s as though I could touch them.
What a cool bird.
Wonderful series. I don’t know about the taste. I’ve actually hugged a tree (what can I say, I’m from Oregon ;>)) but I’d draw the line at tasting it.
Great photos! The woodpecker might be licking tree sap. I imagine it tastes like maple syrup!
Have a wonderful week-end!
