All the usual wildlife at Chesnut Park

I saw a hawk sitting on the pole holding up the volleyball net. A few minutes later it started to rain. I ducked under cover but he just sat there through the quick shower.

All of the usual birds were at Chesnut Park in early November, including the female common yellowthroat warbler.

Two different female American redstarts came out of hiding for a few seconds.

I think this is a female painted bunting, which is fairly rare to see at this park.

Other critters at the park including that alligator in the top picture with a huge fish hanging out of his mouth.

As I was driving into Circle B Bar Reserve early in the morning, I saw a wild hog family. The little piglets look so cute when they are young. I stopped the car and rolled down the window and they took off into the brush.

Little bunny.

Turtles were everywhere.

And a big fish! Is he coming up for air?

It was very quiet on my walk around the Botanical Gardens in Largo in late August. I did manage to find a few fun critters hanging around in the heat.

A late February walk at Circle B Bar Reserve

Great blue herons were all over the park. Including several sitting on nests.

A green heron was stalking something.

A sparrow hiding in the bushes.

The only black bellied whistling ducks I saw. The park use to be full of them. You could hear their whistling all over the park. I’m not sure why there are only a few now.

The robins were scrounging on the ground for bugs.

A lost royal tern. He should be at the beach.

A wood stork showing off. He was actually moving his foot around on the ground to stir up the bugs, frogs or snakes to eat.

I caught a blue gray gnatcatcher being still for just a second.

Hawks, woodpeckers and a lubber

A Cooper’s hawk sitting near his nest. The babies were too small to see them when I took this. The nest was pretty far back off the boardwalk.

Juvenile red shoulder hawks were finally big enough to move around off the nest.

A pileated woodpecker and a downy woodpecker were both looking for bugs. The downy already had a snack.

Tufted titmouse live in the park all year round.

Grasshoppers were starting to invade the park. This one is a baby lubber. He’ll turn all yellow when he grows up.

A walk after work

A baby grackle getting his footing.

“Ha, Ha, I got weeds stuck on my beak.”

A kildeer couple at the back pond. This is the first time I’ve seen kildeer here.

When I got closer to the bell tower, I realized there was an osprey nest on top of it.

I stopped by Carillon Park after work for a walk around the lakes (or just really big ponds). Tons of people jogging and dog walking. I don’t get out before dark much anymore after work so this was a treat to get out.

Skywatch Friday

More than just gators at Gatorland.

Gatorland bunny has the run of the place. But he better watch out and not go into any of the alligator exhibits.

Bees were buzzing.

The swamp walk was full of ferns.

New growth.

Getting crispy.

There are lots of other things at Gatorland besides alligators and wild baby birds. They have parrots out in the open hanging out together and playing. Rabbits and wild ducks can go where ever they want. The swamp walk is a boardwalk that goes through a swamp filled with ferns. Red bellied woodpeckers were flying high up in the trees. I get there early to take pictures of the baby birds in the mangroves along the alligator lake but before I leave I take a walk around the rest of the park to see what else I can find.
