Funny faces at the farm.

Right before everything closed I stopped by Horsepower for Kids, the non-profit rescue farm to walk around and just be outside. The weather was still cool. They strictly rely on donations and admission fees to feed the animals and now that they are closed they are hurting for funds.

The turtles in the pond were coming up on the bank to sun themselves.

Funny faces staring back at me.

A capybara taking a dip. These guys are from South American and this one was a pet that someone realized they didn’t want after all and gave up to the farm.

My Corner of the World

A lost opportunity

Above is an eagle’s nest from 2 years ago at the horse farm near my house. Last winter they nested in a high utility tower instead of this nest. They had taken over an old osprey nest in the tower. I had heard that they were back working on this nest in mid-November so I stopped by the day after a nasty storm had come through the area. When I got to the spot at the farm, the tree was completely empty and the nest was gone.

Here it was on the ground next to the tree. The entire nest had come crashing down and broke apart. It broke my heart to see it on the ground in pieces. I was wondering if this old couple would have it in them to rebuild this nest again or just go back to the utility tower. There wasn’t much of the old tree left.

After walking around the farm for a few minutes, an eagle flies over my head with some nesting material in it. I think this must have been his first visit to the nest this morning.

The mate flew in as well. They seemed confused. Where was their nest? What happened to the tree? The eagle dropped the nesting material and they both took off. At this point, they haven’t returned to the nest to rebuild. I’m assuming they are now back up in the high utility tower close by.

Friendly faces at Horsepower for Kids

Pretty peacocks.

Cute little chickens hanging around the parking area looking for bugs.

A squrrel trying to steal a snack.

One of the many friendly faces.

I caught the resident deer having a momment.

A hawk flying overhead.

Visiting friends in the rain

I hadn’t been to Horsepower for Kids horse farm/sanctuary in a while so I stopped by on the way home after a walk at Chesnut Park. It had started raining so I walked around with my umbrella since the weather had cooled off.

Said “Hi” to the chickens and pigs. The one above came over to give me a snort.

The mandarin duck family seems to be growing there.

The kids out for a ride did not seem to mind the rain.

A gaggle of geese.

The animal sanctuary/petting zoo near my house, Horsepower for Kids, has a small pond with a handful of geese (somehow “gaggle” of geese just sounds silly).  The one above thought he was “King of the pond” standing on the overturned rowboat.

He (or she) seemed to be very popular. Late October isn’t really nesting season but here in central Florida when it’s 85 degrees I guess all year round is nesting season. It was interesting to watch them interact.  A third one was trying to get in on the act.

They were eating mangrove leaves that were growing through the fence.

Pumpkins on the farm

I hadn’t been to my nearby horse farm since May. It’s just too hot in the summer.  The usual ducks were floating around in the pond.

I didn’t know if this one was an escapee or had just flown in for the handouts.

The usual chickens and hens were wandering around.

Mike the camel loves to give kisses. I wasn’t getting any closer.

Waiting to be carved.

Horsepower for Kids was having their annual fall festival fundraiser. I got there early in the morning before crowds. Just stopped in to see how all of the sanctuary animals were doing after Hurricane Irma. They had a lot of damage to exhibits but had mostly recovered.

A cute baby goat!

Some very young chickens were out running around feeding on the main path.

A peacock was showing off.

Strutting around.

Creepy but pretty lizard.

I got to pet the “not quite week old” baby goat. Me and the other kids. He was so cute and friendly. I took this with my phone and was sitting on the ground watching him play.

Chillin with the farm animals

Watching the big horses grazing in the pasture.

This one was taking a dirt bath.

A few of the fowl I snapped while watching the horses.

I spent another morning relaxing at HorsePower for Kids animal sanctuary. There’s something about watching the ducks swim around the pond and the horses grazing that takes the stress away. I guess because I don’t have to feed them or clean up after them. I can just stop by and chill with the farm animals.
