Standoff over a dead fish from my bedroom window

DSC_9730

A usual sight outside my bedroom window. The neighborhood osprey sitting on my neighbor’s dock eating a fish.

Then I realized a vulture was sitting on the same dock across from him.

Another vulture flew in right in front of my window.

You can see the osprey on the left side and the two vultures on the right side. It’s the first time I’ve seen vultures near the osprey.

They both sat there eyeing the fish. The osprey didn’t eat while they were sitting there. He kept watching them both.

One of the vultures flew off and the other one flew over to the side the osprey was on. They were now on the same side.

The vulture only stayed there a few seconds and flew off. I guess they realized the osprey wasn’t giving up what was left of his fish. I’m surprised the osprey didn’t fly off. All of this took place in a matter of 5 minutes. I just happened to look out the window last weekend and saw the vulture sitting there with the osprey, then caught the other one flying in. I’m glad no one was injured in this standoff.

  1. Very cool! And that you witnessed this from your window is awesome.

the face-off shot is really cool. 2 against 1 didn’t really help this time.

That’s terrific! What an encounter! Although I would not have thought the fish would be
‘dead enough’ for the vultures. They seem to prefer their meals a bit more ripe I thought. :-)

Great series! The Osprey probably gently explained to the Vulture that he wasn’t quite finished with the fish yet and to please return later. :)

Well now this is really cool. Who won the face off? That shot where the Vulture and the Osprey are together is super! :-)

  6. Wow, just like the wild, wild west, Dina: your neighbor’s dock and the OK Corral.
Easy to see who’s the good guy here, and he didn’t even have to fight the villains.

  7. All these photos are incredible! But the last photo in particular captures a unique moment! Like having a wild adventure without leaving home! Thank goodness for windows!
