Lots of birds and a big smiling gator

Pretty cattle egret posing on a tree limb.

A few trees down the trail I saw the above dirty cattle egret. He must have been digging around in the mud.

This is a good sign. A great blue heron sitting on a nest. This was taken right after Christmas and I’ve read the couple are still there. Last year they were on this nest for a while and something happened to cause them to lose the eggs. We’re not sure what happened but one weekend they were gone.

A common yellowthroat. I don’t see these very often.

Vulture high-rise down on Alligator Alley.

Yes, more black bellied whistling ducks. They were everywhere.

DSC_9629

More whistlers on the Wading Bird trail. I saw this several weeks before. They were still there. This time another photographer was close by and they didn’t mind at all. Yes, it was a little bit chilly that morning. He’s wearing a jacket in Florida.

Whistler cuties crossing the trail.

These guys thought they were hiding from me.

I finally saw a decent size alligator. He was off in the marsh so not close at all. But he was the only one with his smiling face facing the trail. That snowy egret behind him was paying attention.

A few things I saw on my post Christmas/Pre-New Year’s walk at Circle B Bar Reserve. It was a beautiful morning and a bit chilly. Birds are nesting early so hopefully I’ll have a bumper crop of baby pictures this spring.

Awesome photos! Love the pretty cattle egret. And Whistling Ducks are always a favorite of mine. I swear that gator looks like he is smiling. Great captures.

  3. Caroline says:

    so saith Lewis Carroll:
    How doth the little crocodile
    Improve his shining tail,
And pour the waters of the Nile
    On every golden scale!

How cheerfully he seems to grin,
    How neatly spreads his claws,
    And welcomes little fishes in
    With gently smiling jaws!
(substitute alligator, even if it doesn’t rhyme)
