The last of the white pelicans – Skywatch Friday

Beautiful juvenile white pelicans. How did they end up here in mid-June?

Peacefully floating along.

Pelican fly-by.

Before I left the trail, even more showed up.

Even more were flying overhead. It’s still weird seeing all of these white pelicans so late in the season. For the last 3 years there had been flocks of them during the winter and usually they were gone by February. This winter there were none. Then all of a sudden in early June, four of them show up. One of them had a broken wing. We thought they were just stopping over to stay with the one that had the broken wing. It was just a theory. Then the next weekend, more showed up. A week later, even more. I haven’t been back to Circle B Bar Reserve since I took these so I’m not sure if they are still there. I wonder if it would be a first if they stayed all summer?

It is so nice to see these beautiful photographs! Just once, in the 14 years i have been in Vancouver, we were lucky enough to see some pelicans. I will never forget that evening.

  10. Gorgeous aren’t they? Hope you find out why so late this year and do an update. I’m adding Circle B Bar Reserve to my ‘must visit list.’
