Baby red shoulder hawks after work – Skywatch Friday

I saw a red shoulder hawk flying away from a tree. I looked over to where he came from and saw this tiny head staring down at me.

I walked around the nest and realized there were 3 baby red shoulder hawks in a nest. This one looks like the oldest. He was almost fully grown but still had a lot of fuzzy feathers.

At one point all three were sitting up. The nest was high up in the tree and a little off the trail so it was dark and I had trouble getting a good shot of them. Not to mention it was about to rain.

The older one called out a few times. Probably for mom wondering where dinner was. I didn’t stay long since it was about to start sprinkling.

I headed to Kapok Park after work not expecting much. It was sunny  when I left work but dark clouds were heading my way. I started out my walk and the sun kept going behind clouds but I was hoping the rain would hold off for at least an hour. I got in a good hour and a half walk before it started to sprinkle and of course I was on the other side of the park so I started walking quickly back to my car. Just as I got to my car I could see the moon peeking out before the cloud hid it. It was a nice surprise to find the baby hawks. I’ll have to look for them next time I’m there to see if they are still hanging around the old nest for a while.

Cute babies! We have a nest nearby and the juveniles usually drop in on our yard each year. They like to keep an eye on the bird feeder and sometimes perch right on top of it.
